The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of
The Yawman & Erbe story is as American as they come. Two young men working in manufacturing during the turn of the century. One a master mechanic who was revolutionizing old methods with the introduction of new and at the time radical ideas. The other, responsible for the development. All along, in true American spirit, it occurred to the co-workers that they could do as well for themselves as they were doing for others.

Neither having all of the qualities of a successful business owner in themselves, Mr. Ywaman & Mr. Erbe–co-workers at a Rochester manufacturing company– turned to each other as a complimentary counter-parts with a shared vision. Consumed by desire and ambition to have a business of their own, the two frequently discussed their dream until the “do and dare” moment finally arrived in May 0f 1880 and the two opened “Yarmen & Erbe,” a small enterprise housed in a 600 sq.ft. room. The first employee—a boy to run errands and learn the business—was soon hired, and an agreement was drafted and signed calling for the strict adherence to the the company’s highest principles in manufacturing and business. Within three years, Yawman and Erbe established a reputation for quality work–both in material and workmanship, and that reputation rapidly spread. By the early 1900s “Yawman & Erbe” grew to one of the largest office furniture manufacturing firms in the world. According to the company magazine published in 1909, Y&E was a monument to Yawman and Erbe’s life work and and “an example of what can be accomplished with no other capital than brains and brawn honestly and intelligently applied.”

Vaudeville-style channel letters for Blue Cow Kitchen in Downtown Los Angeles

Food Town, U.S.A. has a hot new restaurant and bar, the Blue Cow Kitchen. Hollywood Reporter calls it a sit-down, chef-driven flagship restaurant opened by Mario Del Pero and Ellen Chen, the partners behind the local chain of fast-casual Mendocino Farms artisanal sandwich shops. In keeping with the industrial vibe of downtown L.A. the folks at Blue Cow Kitchen called on us to create this “Eat Happy” sign and we’re honored to have contributed to the look of this space. Visit the Blue Cow Kitchen at 350 S. Grand Ave., L.A., 213.621.2249, bluecowkitchen.com.
While REHAB has a large selection of vintage channel letters, they are hard to find. For the Blue Cow Kitchen project, we fabricated these using steel sheet metal. We then did all of the electrical work to create the final product. For more info call: (323) 935-8438.

As a leading name in industrial vintage furniture, we’re excited to say that our finds appear on the set of the hit (Golden Globe nominated) show New Girl. In an interview featured on the entertainment site BuzzSugar, New Girl creator Liz Meriwether says the Downtown LA apartment is meant to look industrial. According to the article, Meriwether said that there was a distinct idea for the apartment. “We just wanted the feeling of a space that once was a factory and now is a loft,” she said. Welcome Cesar Jurado
Rehab is excited to announce the addition of Ceasar Jurado to our team. As our new production manager, Cesar is already streamlining our work processes and helping us to keep up with the demand as we grow. Cesar moved to L.A. a year ago from Venezuela. An ingenious engineer by trade (actually electrical), Cesar–like all of us here–was been bitten by the bug at an early age. He’s been restoring and fixing things ever since he was little. Call it a labor of love. We’re happy to have him on our team!

Patient Education as Art
We love the kitschy illustrations. Look at her, driving around in her white gloves, pearls and blond beehive.
1950s chiropractic poster (by Gonstead). It shows the “Mechanics of Whiplash” in the cervical spine and disk derangement in the lumbar spine.
